Health care reform is a major objective of the Obama administration, and it is likely that payment reforms will be based on medical homes, value purchasing, bundled payments and quality and outcomes assessment. We believe the initiative that will enable providers to retain and grow their commercial patient base is one in which there is collaboration among the medical group, a hospital system or systems, and the health plans. Those that move ahead with such an initiative as soon as possible will be better prepared to benefit from reform. Our presentation will provide a framework for understanding the current operational models, recognizing the delivery system changes that need to be made, and gaining an appreciation for the necessary steps in developing and implementing a pilot project. An overview of value-based purchasing payment reform models and implementation examples will be shared.
